Daydream your way to a cracking creative idea

It’s Monday morning, and you’ve been set a super short deadline for an idea to be a produced. Two words, Mind – block. You scramble around for inspiration, everyone’s ideas seem the same, and nothing springs to mind. You carry on with the rest of your workload and have a typical evening at home. Lights off, et voila! A spark!

How come our best ideas come to us when we’re not forcing them?

In 2012 researchers found that letting your mind wander can lead to better creative problem solving. ‘Daydreaming is how we access problem solving. Daydreaming is how we access our big picture state of mind, Fries said. When you’re in a daydreaming state of mind you can visualise it, simulate your own version of events.’

When you’re not actively trying to solve a problem, it often stays in the back of your mind. Your brain is still subtly ticking over the problem whether you are aware of it or not. Working on challenging or intense tasks for a long period of time can lead to your mind becoming exhausted, making it tougher to create fresh new ideas. Daydreaming, or taking a step back, enables your mind a rest, be free of restraints and therefore more likely to create new ideas.

Making sure you understand the brief, what is expected, the target market and any initial research is key, but overthinking can do more harm than good. Write down initial ideas, and then take a step back.

Fear the familiar. It’s important to create ideas that stand out from the crowd, to cut through the competition set your brand apart from the rest. You need to be different to be noticed.

As discussed by Mike Hall and Claire Bickerton, ‘Being different does not have to mean being wacky, or crazy, or weird; it just means not being the same. It means being individual. And you don’t have to be different in every single thing you do. But you have to ‘zig’ somewhere along the way.’

Ideas can flourish from just verbalising and sharing with others, whether it’s with colleagues in the kitchen, or loved ones at home. Pressure test it with people who are your target audience, and those who are not, for a good range of feedback.

So if you’re struggling to come up with an idea, do your research, but then make sure you take a step back to relax your mind, chat it over with friends.
